The British government sought today to improve relations with ethnic communities after suspected Islamic militants bombed London's transport system.

Home Office Minister Hazel Blears hopes a series of eight meetings across Britain this summer with Muslim leaders will help to tackle the radicalisation of young Muslims.

But she could face a tough battle reassuring community leaders over police adopting a stop-and-search policy to target young men from specific ethnic groups.

Four British Muslim suicide bombers killed 52 people in attacks on London trains and a bus on July 7th. Two weeks later, four other bombers tried to target the same system but their bombs failed to detonate.

Four prime suspects have been arrested in connection with that incident after the biggest manhunt in British history.

Ms Blears's first stop on her nationwide tour is the northern English town of Oldham, synonymous with ethnic discord since Britain's worst race riots for a decade exploded there in 2001.

Police have said they will take race into account when deciding which people to stop and search, despite fears among some Muslims that this could anger members of their community.

Ms Blears stressed on BBC radio: "I think it should be used fairly and proportionately on the basis of intelligence."
