Thirty-six workers were dead and 14 were missing after a gas explosion at a coal mine in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine today, the Emergencies Ministry said.
The methane gas blast ripped through a shaft of the Zasyadko mine near the centre of the city, a duty officer at the Emergencies Ministry said.
He said another 20 miners had been taken to hospital. Officials said 259 coal miners were working at the mine when the blast occurred at 6:58 a.m., more than half a mile below ground.
