INDONESIA: The UN has charged Indonesia's former military chief, Gen Wiranto, six senior army officers and East Timor's last civilian governor with committing crimes against humanity during the territory's 1999 independence referendum.
Indonesia immediately said yesterday it would never hand over the indicted men for trial. But warrants are to be lodged with Interpol, meaning the men will run the risk of arrest if they leave the country.
The main allegations against the suspects were "murder, deportation and persecution", UN prosecutors said in a statement issued in the East Timorese capital, Dili.
"[The alleged offences] were all undertaken as part of a widespread or systematic attack directed against the civilian population of East Timor, and specifically targeted those who were believed to be supporters of independence for East Timor," they said.
