The UN General Assembly has indefinitely postponed a summit of heads of state and government on children's rights, which was due to start in New York next week.

More than 75 heads of state and government had said they would attend a three-day special session of the Assembly starting on September 19th.

The 56th General Assembly met for the first time amid tight security put in place after yesterday's catastrophic attacks on New York's World Trade Center.

Meanwhile, Mr Han Seung-soo, South Korea's minister of foreign affairs and trade, was elected president of the 56th Assembly and immediately condemned the yesterday’s attacks on the US "in the strongest possible terms".

The Assembly then passed a one-paragraph resolution postponing the special session. The resolution was adopted without a vote.
