Union to discuss Brazilian workers

SIPTU workers at Hannon's poultry factory in Roscommon may seek an all-out picket

SIPTU workers at Hannon's poultry factory in Roscommon may seek an all-out picket. They are meeting this morning to discuss industrial action over the company's growing use of non-union workers from Brazil.

According to branch secretary Mr John McCarrick the Brazilians were paid only the national minimum wage after representations by the union. They are now receiving the same basic rates as SIPTU members but no overtime.

According to a report on RTE's 6.01 news last night, major deductions have been made from their pay packets. The Brazilian employees now comprise 40 of the 60-strong workforce.

There was no comment from Hannon's last night.
