Mandate, the union representing bar staff, is to put in a pay claim well in excess of 10 per cent to compensate members for working the longer opening hours proposed by the Minister for Justice, Mr O'Donoghue.
Its national official, Mr John Douglas, has also called on the Minister to exercise "zero tolerance" with publicans found employing lounge staff under 16 after 10 p.m. Mr Douglas said yesterday that the union would be seeking the introduction of shift premiums as well as higher basic rates of pay. These would be in addition to Partnership 2000 increases.
