Ulster Unionist MP Mr David Burnside has backed an proposal aimed at securing unionist unity before the Stormont Assembly elections scheduled to take place in May.

The South Antrim MP said he was "100 per cent behind" the launch of the "Stormont Principles" - an attempt to establish a set of guiding principles ahead of the next Assembly election.

They are also expected to stress the need for Northern Ireland to determine its own future without any outside pressure and underline the importance of only parties who committed to exclusively peaceful means participating in Government.

"This is an attempt to re-establish a clear bottom line in unionism, having seen what has gone on over the past five years since the signing of the Belfast Agreement," he said.

"As we head into the Assembly election it is necessary that we have one united unionist family committed to a set of principles which will deliver accountable democracy.

"We believe that the Stormont principles can attract support right across unionism in the Ulster Unionists, the Democratic Unionists and the smaller unionist parties".

The principles have also been endorsed by former Ulster Unionist leader Lord Molyneaux.
