An emergency response unit has been established in Cork in an effort to find replacement jobs for 120 textile workers who lost their jobs at the weekend.

The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Ms Harney, said she had contacted FAS concerning the provision of training facilities for the Millfield textile workers. There was widespread condemnation in Cork of the manner in which the factory closure was announced; many of the workers heard the news on the radio. Yesterday the Minister for Education and Science, Mr Martin, said he was giving the matter priority and he hoped that in the near future replacement jobs would be found.
