Juan Sebastian Veron has completed a £28.1 million sterling move to Manchester United and has signed a five-year deal.

United's plc announced the clinching of the deal via the Stock Exchange this afternoon.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has broken the British transfer record with the capture of the 26-year-old Argentina international from Lazio.

Veron underwent a medical yesterday at a Cheshire private hospital and then met up with his new team-mates a United's Carrington training complex.

The player, who survived investigations in Italy over false documentation that allowed him to play for Lazio, will now have to wait a couple of weeks before he gets a British work permit.

His Argentinian passport will accompany the application to the Department of Employment but the issue of the permit will be a formality.

Veron meets all the requirements, having played more than 75 per cent of Argentina's competitive internationals over the past two years.

The permit delay will mean he is unlikely to play his first game for United until Ryan Giggs's testimonial against Celtic at Old Trafford on August 1st. He will miss the United's three-game tour to the Far East later this month.
