Ruud van Nistelrooy hit a late winner for Manchester United to give them a 4-3 win at Everton and keep the champions just two points behind Arsenal who were 3-1 winners at Wolves today.

United were three up at halftime after Louis Saha scored twice in 20 minutes and van Nistelrooy hit his 100th goal in English football.

But Everton staged a remarkable recovery to draw level 3-3 with goals by David Unsworth, an own goal from John O'Shea and a third by Kevin Kilbane.

Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry and Kolo Toure scored the Arsenal goals at Molineux while Romanian striker Ioan Ganea pulled one back for his first league goal for Wolves.

Newcastle United beat Leicester City 3-1 at home to leap over Charlton Athletic into fourth place on goal difference. Charlton play at third-placed Chelsea tomorrow.

Jermain Defoe, signed from West Ham United for £7 million on Monday, took only 13 minutes to score his first goal for Tottenham Hotspur on his debut to put them 1-0 up at home to Portsmouth.

Spurs went on to win 4-3 with two from Ireland's Robbie Keane and a late winner by Uruguayan Gus Poyet.

Leeds United fell to their sixth successive defeat, 2-0 at Aston Villa, to remain firmly rooted to the bottom of the standings.
