Up to 20 passengers were reported killed and many others injured yesterday when a commuter train derailed and crashed on Sydney's outskirts, overturning at least two of its carriages
Television reports said dozens more were trapped in the wreckage of the train, which was travelling south from Sydney to Port Kembla with about 70 people aboard.
News footage showed two carriages on their side and two others apparently badly damaged with rescue workers struggling to reach casualties.
Emergency services said it was too early to speculate on the number of casualties.
But later reports said that up to 20 people were believed to have died.
The accident happened about 7.30 a.m. in a relatively inaccessible area in the outer suburb of Waterfall on or close to Sydney's Royal National Park where the rail tracks run alongside a cliff face.
