A yacht which was found adrift some 120 miles off the south-west coast yesterday is probably a vessel which has been missing since November, according to the Naval Service.

The upturned yacht, understood to be around 35ft, was spotted by a German research vessel yesterday afternoon. It is believed the owners, two Dutch men aged 37 and 17, were on board originally.

The LE Emer was brought in to tow the yacht ashore. However, the operation is expected to take up to 24 hours because of the difficulty in towing an upturned vessel.

The Naval Service said part of the name on the vessel was discovered by a diving team and it fit the description of The Welsh Dragon.

The boat left Savannah in the US in mid-October and was heading for the Netherlands, according to a spokesman for Valentia Island Coast Guard.

Contact was lost on November 3rd, and a search was mounted.

The Coast Guard spokesman confirmed that two people were on board, and private search aircraft had been hired by their families to try and locate them.
