The Department of Foreign Affairs has contacted the US embassy in Dublin following the killing of an Irishwoman serving with US forces in Afghanistan.

Ciara Durkin (29) from Quincy, Massachusetts, originally from Connemara, was shot dead on September 27th within the Bagram airbase, north of Kabul.

She was a member of the Massachusetts Army National Guard, and had been serving in Afghanistan for almost a year.

The US military confirmed yesterday that it was conducting an investigation into the shooting, which would take up to eight weeks.

Speaking on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta earlier today, Ms Durkin's brother-in-law Pádraig Ó Conghaile appealed to the Department of Foreign Affairs to take part in the investigation.

But a spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs told ireland.comthat it had so far not been contacted by the family.

He said, however, that officials from the Department had been in contact with US Embassy personnel in Dublin in relation to Ms Durkin's death.
