The US special envoy to Northern Ireland, Mr Richard Haass, is visiting Belfast today for talks on the security situation there.

He will meet the new Police Service of Northern Ireland chief constable, Mr Hugh Orde, and representatives of political parties in Belfast.

Mr Haass is expected to repeat the Bush administration's support for the new policing institutions at his meeting with Mr Orde.

He is to meet delegations from Sinn Féin, the Women's Coalition, the SDLP, the DUP and the loyalist Progressive Unionist Party. A breakfast meeting with Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble has been arranged for tomorrow.
