US forces said today they had detained six suspects in the assassination of the Baghdad governor a week ago.
The suspects in the killing of Ali al-Haidri were arrested in a morning raid on a house in western Baghdad, the US military said in a statement.
Insurgents bent on undermining Iraq's US-backed government frequently kill officials and politicians, but the assailants are rarely reported captured.
The suspects were arrested after tips from local residents, the US military said. No shots were fired in the raid.
Gunmen killed Haidri in a roadside ambush on January 4, in Iraq's highest-profile assassination in eight months that showed the insurgents' power to strike at the heart of the governing class.
A group led by al-Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, behind some of the bloodiest attacks since the US-led invasion in 2003, claimed responsibility for the assassination, saying its fighters had struck down a "tyrant and American agent".
The shooting had raised fresh doubts over whether security forces would be able to protect politicians and voters as the January 30 ballot draws near.
