US special operations forces raided a suspected Taliban or al-Qaeda hideout north of Kandahar, killing five people and capturing 32 others, Pentagon officials said.

The compound, located near Deh Rawod in Oruzgan province, was believed to be a sanctuary for senior Taliban or al-Qaeda fighters, a US spokesmen said. But he confirmed that no major figures were believed to have been captured or killed.

The prisoners were taken to the Bagram air base north of Kabul for questioning, said Lieutenant Commander Matthew Klee, a Central Command spokesman.

Lt Klee said the US forces suffered no casualties in the raid.
