Washington - The grand jury looking into sexual allegations against President Clinton resumed work yesterday amid reports that Ms Monica Lewinsky visited the White House three dozen times after leaving her low-level job there.

The first witness to appear before the independent counsel Mr Kenneth Starr's grand jury was a woman whose connection to the case was not known. Mr George Stephanopoulos, a former top adviser to Mr Clinton turned media commentator, was expected to appear later.

The New York Times reported yesterday that Ms Lewinsky, the 24-year-old who is at the centre of the controversy, was cleared to enter the White House 37 times between the time she left her staff job there in April 1996, to work at the Pentagon and December 1997. The paper said she was usually cleared for entry by Mr Clinton's personal secretary, Ms Betty Currie.
