WASHINGTON - The US House of Representatives has approved, by 389 to 22, an anti terrorism bill lacking most of the provisions President Clinton had sought following the TWA Flight 800 crash and the Olympic Games pipe bomb blast. But Senators want to amend it meaning the bill cannot be debated until they return from an August recess.
The measure was drafted by Republicans early yesterday after the collapse of bipartisan negotiations amid political rancour. Although some Democrats called it a sham, all sides said the bill went at least some way to meeting anti terrorism objectives, especially in the area of airport security.
Earlier Mr Clinton said he would do "what is appropriate"
if the TWA explosion was caused by terrorists, but reiterated authorities still had no proof.
