US retail sales rose 0.2 percent in June after a revised 0.4 percent increase in May, the Commerce Department said today.

The report was weaker than market expectations of a 0.3 percent rise. But the May figure was revised upward from an earlier estimate of a 0.1 percent increase.

Year on year, retail sales in June were up 4.0 percent.

The rise in June retail sales was led by autos, electronics, department store sales, restaurants and bar sales, and health and personal care sales. These gains were offset by sales at gasoline stations, clothing stores, sporting goods stores, and non store retailers.
