Belgrade - A convoy carrying high-ranking US officials, including the ambassador to Yugoslavia, came under fire late yesterday in the tense south of the country, where ethnic Albanian rebels are fighting Serbian security forces, a US diplomat in Belgrade said.
The Serbian Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Nebojsa Covic, quoted by the state Tanjug news agency, blamed the shooting on ethnic Albanian separatists. But the military chief of the rebels, Commander Lleshi, said: "It was Serbian snipers who fired on the convoy."
