US/VENEZUELA:The Bush administration declined to congratulate Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez on Sunday's re-election victory but held out the prospect of co-operation with his government.
"We look forward to having the opportunity to work with the Venezuelan government on issues of mutual interest," said state department press officer Eric Watnik.
Mr Watnik said that Washington had followed closely reports of intimidation and voting irregularities.
He also praised the campaign run by Mr Chávez's main opponent, Manuel Rosales.
