The US Senate has appointed General David Petraeus as Washington's most senior commander in the Middle East.
Gen Petraeus has largely been credited with helping to reduce violence in Iraq. His nomination follows the resignation of Admiral William Fallon who stepped down in March over a disagreement with the Bush administration over its policy on Iran.
Gen Petraeus will have responsibility for US operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as dealing with Iran and Pakistan
He will take charge at a time of heightened tensions with Iran, which test-fired missiles this week that Tehran says can reach Israel and US assets in the region.
