The United States today set out four steps the Libyan government must take to take responsibility for its actions following the conviction of a Libyan agent for the Lockerbie airliner bombing.
"The government of Libya must take responsibility for the action of Libyan officials," US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher told a regular briefing.
"That means revealing everything they know about the Lockerbie bombing, paying reparations, a clear declaration acknowledging responsibility for the actions of the Libyan officials and clear, unambiguous actions which demonstrate the Libyan government understands its responsibility," he said.
Boucher declined to give further details but said Washington was consulting other countries, including Britain, to flesh out these demands and that US and British officials would meet soon with a Libyan official to discuss them.
Libya wants US and UN sanctions to be ended.
President George W. Bush earlier applauded the conviction of one Libyan found guilty of murdering 270 people in the 1988 bombing of the Pan Am flight over Lockerbie, Scotland, and said the government of Libya must take responsibility.
