A US soldier was killed in a rocket-propelled grenade attack while on patrol in central Baghdad early this morning.
A US military spokeswoman said the soldier from the 1st Armoured Division died in hospital after the attack. No one else was wounded, she said.
The death brought to 73 the number of US soldiers killed in hostile action in Iraq since Washington declared major combat over on May 1st.
Iraqi guerrillas have focused their attacks in the capital and the Sunni heartland to the city's north and west.
