Insurgents attacked a US convoy near the town of Balad north of Baghdad today, killing one American soldier and wounding another.
Earlier the US army reported a US soldier was shot dead in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the British military has still not established whether the January 30th crash of a C-130 transport plane northwest of Baghdad was an accident or an attack. Nine Britons and an Australian were killed but they do not yet appear in the totals.
A senior US Air Force general, said today that a tape broadcast by Al Jazeera, purporting to show the downing of the aircraft, was likely bogus.
The videotape issued by the 1920 Revolution Brigades, showed a mid-air explosion, then burning debris of what looked like a plane on the ground.
"I'm pretty confident that the tapes that they showed on Al Jazeera were bogus," Lt Gen Lance Smith said.
