WASHINGTON - The US army yesterday charged its top enlisted soldier with adultery and indecent assault against four military women in the latest chapter of a sexual harassment scandal that has rocked the service.

A senior officer will investigate the case against Gene McKinney (46), the only soldier who carries the venerated US military title Sergeant Major of the Army, as a leading member of the service's highest enlisted rank. He faces 18 sexual misconduct charges involving three army women and a female sailor and is also charged with maltreatment of soldiers.
