The United States has welcomed the Lockerbie bomb trial verdict but said Libya must take responsibility and the ruling did not signify an end to sanctions against Tripoli.

The White House issued a statement after three Scottish judges found Abdel Basset al Megrahi guilty and acquitted co-accused Mr Al-Amin Khalifa.
"This verdict is a victory for an international effort and has resulted in an indictment of a member of the Libyan intelligence services," the statement said.
"The government of Libya must take responsibility."
The White House also said the verdict does not in itself signify an end to UN sanctions against Libya.
It said after consulting with Britain the US government would approach Libya in the near future to discuss the remaining steps Libya must take under the UN resolutions before sanctions are lifted.
