The US will suspend sanctions barring American investment in Burma in response to political reforms, but will retain laws to ensure against backsliding, US secretary of state Hillary Clinton said yesterday.
“Today we say to American business: invest in Burma and do it responsibly,” Mrs Clinton said during an appearance with Burmese foreign minister Wunna Maung Lwin, who was on a first official US visit in decades as ties between the two countries warm rapidly.
Mrs Clinton said the United States would issue a general license to permit American investments across Burma’s economy, and that US energy, mining and financial services companies were all free now to look for opportunities in the populous southeast Asian nation. – (Reuters)
