The Ulster Unionist Party has called on the Parades Commission to become a "mediator rather than a decision-maker" in the issue of contentious parades. In its proposals for a review of the commission published yesterday, the UUP also stressed the need for a more human-rights based approach to be adopted and a more politically representative membership.
The UUP Assembly member, Mr Duncan Shipley-Dalton, who prepared the party's review, said: "What we are suggesting is that it should become a statutory requirement for the commission to exhaust all possible avenues of mediation before a decision is actually taken on a contentious parade."
