Sales of charity Christmas cards should be exempt from Value Added Tax at 21 per cent, a Green Party TD, Mr Trevor Sargent, has said. He said Irish charities benefitted enormously from Christmas card sales but the costs of printing, distribution and retailers' mark-ups were high. "The least the Government could do would be to exempt registered charity organisations from the VAT charge."
