The Vatican will spend the next two years taking stock of its rich cultural heritage, counting all the photographs, maps, ancient weapons, and musical scores that make up its vast collections, the Holy See said today.

Aside from the collections it holds in museums and the rare manuscripts that litter its libraries, the Vatican will count sculptures, old carriages, frescos and etchings in its inventory.

Under Vatican law, authorities are also required to count all parks, villas and gardens with aesthetic or historical interest, and all objects with historical, scientific, or technological importance.
