A Belfast man who pretended a cucumber was a gun during a bank robbery was convicted at Glenties District Court in Co Donegal yesterday.
The court was told that James Conway (31), of Donegall Road, Belfast, found himself without money in a pub. He stole a cucumber and bin liner in a grocery shop and went to the manager's office in the Bank of Ireland where he demanded £100, which he was given.
After hearing that the man had a drink problem, Judge O'Donnell suspended a six-month jail sentence, ordering him to enter a £500 bond.
