A DEVICE left at the gates of Newtownhamilton police station early yesterday was viable, a PSNI spokesman said. The device, found on the backseat of a silver Peugout 406 car, consisted of a number of containers of flammable liquids.

It was defused by British army technical officers yesterday evening allowing residents of around 60 houses to return to their homes.

PSNI Chief Inspector Sam Cordner last night condemned those responsible: Yet again these cowardly criminals have shown complete disregard for the safety of the people of south Armagh and for police officers who serve this community.”

The alert came a day after the Real IRA exploded a car bomb beside the British army Palace Barracks in Holywood, Co Down, which houses the MI5 intelligence service’s Northern Ireland headquarters.
