A viable explosive device was discovered in the driveway of a Co Kildare house last night.

A viable explosive device was discovered in the driveway of a Co Kildare house last night.

Gardaí evacuated a number of home in the Temple Mills estate in Rathangan when the suspect device was discovered at about 9.15pm.

The Army bomb disposal team arrived on site at 11.30pm to examine the device and it carried out a controlled explosion. The scene was declared safe by the Army at 1.45am.

In a statement, the Defence Forces described the object as a “viable improvised explosive device”.

The Army passed on the remains of the device to the Garda to assist with its investigations.

Gardaí are investigating the incident. Nobody was injured and there was no damage, a Garda spokesman said.
