Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster has carried out a post-mortem examination on an 18-year-old student who died after a suspected accident with a gas heater in a house in Tralee on Thursday.

Paddy Hughes, of Moyvane, Co Kerry, was pronounced dead at Kerry General Hospital shortly after being brought there from the sitting-room of a house in which he and another young man were found unconscious.

The second young man, also a student at the Institute of Technology Tralee, was in a comfortable condition in Kerry General Hospital yesterday.

Both were found in the sitting-room of their rented accommodation at 9am when friends called to bring them to college.

Poet and schoolteacher Gabriel Fitzmaurice, who is from Moyvane-Newtownsandes, said the north Kerry community was very upset. Both men were from the area, and in the past year the village had had to come to terms with the deaths of a number of young men and women.
