The death rate has been higher within the Catholic than the Protestant population (2.5 per 1,000 Catholics, and 1.9 per 1,000 Protestants)
87 per cent of the total were killed by paramilitaries (59 per cent by republicans and 28 per cent by loyalists) and 11 per cent by the security forces
Areas hardest hit were north and west Belfast, Derry and south Armagh
Between 40,000 and 50,000 people have been injured
