Three men who died at the weekend in an accident in Co Meath have been named as Mr Leo Jones (54), from Mullingar, Mr Graham Walsh (25) and Mr Ken Masterson (20), both from Granard, Co Longford.

They died when their van collided with an articulated lorry on the N4 between Clonard and Enfield near Mother Hubbard's restaurant. They were returning from Leopardstown racecourse where they worked as tote staff.

Gardai at Trim said the accident happened on the Dublin-bound lane at a slip road close to the restaurant which functions as a hard shoulder.

It occurred at about 7 p.m. on Sunday evening, and gardai said the roads were icy. The stretch of road had been the scene of a number of accidents in the past, gardai added.

A spokesman for the National Roads Authority said there were no serious deficiencies in the stretch of road. Construction of a 34km motorway between Kinnegad and Kilcock would begin early next year to relieve traffic build-up, he added.

Last September two people, including a special adviser to the Minister for Health and Children, were killed on the same stretch when two cars collided with a coach. Some 40 people were taken to hospital following the accident, between Enfield and Kinnegad on the Co Kildare side of Leinster Bridge.

A girl who was drowned at the West County Hotel swimming pool in Ennis, Co Clare, on Sunday was named as Rhiannon Loughnane (3), of Callaghans Mills, Co Clare.
