Holy Smoke 18

Holy Smoke 18

Directed by Jane Campion Starring Kate Winslet, Harvey Keitel, Pam Grier, Julie Hamilton

Jane Campion's initially intriguing but ultimately uneven exercise which sustains interest largely due to Kate Winslet's luminous performance as a young Australian backpacker who joins a cult in India. However, Harvey Keitel is miscast as an American "exit counsellor". The movie begins to crumble as it becomes more didactic and heavy-handed - and turns merely ludicrous when Keitel dons a little red cocktail dress with matching lipstick.

Directed by Bruce McCulloch Starring Molly Shannon, Will Ferell, Elaine Hendrix, Glynis Johns

In this spin-off from the US TV comedy series Saturday Night Live, Molly Shannon again plays her small-screen character, Mary Katherine Gallagher, an Irish-American Catholic schoolgirl. While it is never as witty as Clueless, the result is amusingly silly.

The Hurricane 15

Directed by Norman Jewison Starring Denzel Washington, Viscellous Reon Shannon, John Hannah, Deborah Kara Unger, Liev Schreiber

Denzel Washington plays Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, the middleweight boxer who spent 19 years in prison until 1985 when his conviction for a triple murder was overturned. Bob Dylan's 1976 song about the case, Hurricane, features prominently on the soundtrack of this muddled, simplistic picture which is redeemed only by Washington's dignified, authoritative central performance.

Whatever Happened To Harold Smith? 15

Directed by Pete Hewitt Starring Tom Courtenay, Michael Legge, Laura Fraser, Stephen Fry, David Thewlis, Charlie Hunnam, Lulu

Michael Legge, the young Newry actor who played the 15-year-old Frank McCourt in Angela's Ashes, is likeable as a disco-obsessed teenager who works in a law firm and falls for a colleague (Laura Fraser) in this slight and fairly naive romantic comedy set in 1977 in a north of England town.
