Dublin - A series of vigils will be held outside the Dublin embassies of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council this week to demand no further delay in the deployment of peacekeeping troops to East Timor, reports Joe Humphreys

The first two protests take place today at the Chinese and French embassies at 40 and 36 Ailesbury Road respectively. There will be a vigil tomorrow at the Russian embassy at 186 Orwell Road, Churchtown; on Thursday at the US embassy in Ballsbridge and on Friday at the British embassy on Merrion Road. Organised by Amnesty International and the East Timor Ireland Solidarity Campaign, each vigil will take place from 1-2 p.m.

Goal has warned that thousands of people may be butchered in the time it takes to assemble the UN force and has called on the Government to exert pressure on the US to speed up the process.

Meanwhile, Jesuit priests in Ireland have paid tribute to a German colleague and former religious student here who was murdered in Dili at the weekend.

Father Karl Albrecht (70) studied philosophy at St Stanislaus College near Tullamore, Co Offaly and theology at Milltown Park, Dublin before going to East Timor.

Initial reports are unclear as to whether he was deliberately targeted by militias because of his work for refugees or was murdered by looters taking advantage of the current mayhem.
