Ballinderry, a small north Tipperary lakeside village, has been in mourning following the death of a 10-year-old girl who died after becoming entangled in a swing rope on a tree.
Johanne Singer was playing with her two brothers on a swing in a garden near her home in Ballinderry on Good Friday when she slipped and became entangled in it.
She is thought to have suffered a broken neck.
Local parish priest Father Tom Seymour said: "People here were totally shocked because they did not expect this type of thing to happen, especially on a swing where you usually see children playing."
On Friday evening, the girl was playing with her brothers. Her father, Martin, called them for tea. When Johanne failed to arrive he went to look for her and found her at about 6 p.m.. It appeared she slipped and became entangled in a swing on a tree in a nearby garden.
Attempts to revive the girl failed and she was pronounced dead on arrival to Nenagh General Hospital.
Her parents Martin and Gudrun, originally from Austria, have been living in the village of Ballinderry for a number of years. Johanne is survived by her parents and two brothers Paul (7), Jonathan (4) and Fiona aged 1 1/2.
