Violence in north Belfast points to loyalist feud

A taxi cab was destroyed in north Belfast today in a petrol bomb attack as tensions rose in the loyalist Ballysillan area.

The tensions followed a police seizure of 30 petrol bombs and a quantity of drugs last night during searches in the Ballysillan area.

Extra police have been drafted into the area in recent days amid concerns about a feud between rival loyalist paramilitary gangs, the UVF and LVF.

In the latest incident, a brick was used to smash the back window of the car and a petrol bomb was thrown inside while its owner was in bed in Silverstream Avenue shortly after midnight.

The owner heard noises outside his home and when he got up saw his taxi was on fire. Neighbours helped extinguish the blaze with a hose but the interior of the cab was destroyed.

Earlier this week a taxi firm owned by prominent loyalist Jackie Mahood announced its closure after a number of people were threatened and attacked.

One man was arrested following the discovery of the petrol bombs. He was later released on police bail.
