Vodafone said today the launch of its third-generation (3G) of Internet-enabled mobile phones could slip into 2003 due to a potential shortage of handsets.
A spokesman for Vodafone, the world's biggest mobile phone operator, confirming a report in the
Wall Street Journal Europe
, said the company was cutting back on the roll-out of 3G infrastructure in Britain and elsewhere in Europe.

It now planned to build 750 3G base stations in Britain by the end of this year instead of the original plan for 1,200.
Vodafone shares were down 3.5 per cent in early trade.
