Wicklow County Council will vote today on controversial plans for the creation of a 300 acre "superdump" at Ballynagran near Rathnew. The vote follows a High Court decision earlier this year which overturned the view of the county manager, Mr Blaise Treacy, that the creation of the dump was within his remit. Today's vote may not end the four-year dispute between the manager and members of the Ballynagran Action Committee, as Mr Treacy has said if he loses today's vote, he will appeal the High Court decision to the Supreme Court. The committee argues that a plan to pump lechate from the dump into the sea off Wicklow Town could create an environmental disaster, and that the Environmental Impact Statement prepared for the dump was seriously flawed.
