Failing to train a waitress how to clean and shine a wine glass safely has cost a Dublin hotel more than £17,000 in personal injury damages and legal costs.

Ms Justine McManus (26), told Dublin Circuit Civil Court she had never been shown properly how to shine a long-stemmed glass. On a busy night in the Harcourt Hotel in September, 1999, a glass stem broke and lacerated her left wrist.

Olema Consultants Ltd, which trades as The Harcourt Hotel on Harcourt Street, Dublin, did not present any evidence. Judge Michael O'Shea said if it had been the normal standard glass he would not have held for her but because it was a long-stemmed wine glass he believed the hotel was negligent in having failed to provide proper training.
