On a walking holiday on the Continent, sunburn is an even bigger problem for the fair-skinned Irish in mountain areas than it is on the Costas. Use plenty of sunscreen, drink lots of liquid and wear sunglasses with good UV protection.

As weather often changes suddenly and dramatically in mountainous regions, you should always carry extra clothing and waterproofs. Comfortable, well-walked boots are essential. Blisters are a walker's nightmare and high temperatures combined with continuous walking will take its toll. Try doing as much walking as you can prior to departure always pays dividends.

Since walking boots are bulky, you can save excess baggage charges by wearing them on the outward and return journeys.
