London - The British Defence Ministry yesterday described as "speculation" a newspaper report that it would shortly announce a unilateral cut of up to a half in Britain's Trident nuclear warheads. But a spokesman said a ministry working group has been "looking at our nuclear posture" as part of a Strategic Defence Review (SDR) ordered by the Labour government when it took power in May 1997.
Britain at present has three submarines each carrying about 96 Trident warheads. A fourth is due to come into service in August.
