A bench warrant has been issued for the arrest of a man who was recently released one month into a five-year sentence for threatening prison officers

with a syringe. Michael Carolan had been jailed in February for threatening the officers while he was robbing a prison chaplain's car and was released by Judge Kieran O'Connor in March despite probation reports which said he was unsuitable for supervision.

Judge O'Connor has now issued a bench warrant for his arrest after Garda Seamus Holihan told him Carolan had failed to attend three meetings with probation officers.

Carolan (22), of Fatima Mansions, Rialto, pleaded guilty to having a syringe with intent on December 2nd, 1998.
