An arrest warrant has been issued for a speeding drink-driver accused of killing an Irish holiday couple celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary in Spain. Daycare-centre worker John O’Connell and his wife Mary, Caherciveen, Co Kerry, were killed in May 2008 after being knocked down as they walked back from a pub in Orihuela Costa near Alicante.
Court workers have spent months trying to track down driver Juan Ochoa to inform him he will be tried for double manslaughter. They have been unable to find him at any of the addresses he gave the court when he was arrested.
Yesterday a judge in charge of the case ordered police nationwide to detain him if they find him.
Mr Ochoa is facing four years in jail. State prosecutors want the courts to make him pay the couple’s relatives nearly €80,000 in compensation.
