Washington - Herbert Block, who under the name Herblock skewered politicians and the powerful in editorial cartoons for more than 70 years, died on Sunday at 91, the Washington Post said yesterday.

A fixture on the Post's editorial page since 1946, Herblock made his reputation in the late 1940s and early 1950s with vivid portrayals of a young Richard Nixon and Senator Joseph McCarthy. He often pictured McCarthy covered with mud and coined the phrase "McCarthyism" to describe the senator's style of attack and search for communists.
