The Comptroller and Auditor General John Buckley will retire at the end of February.
Mr Buckley, whose office is the watchdog for spending by Government departments and agencies, was appointed to the position in May 2008 to and succeed John Purcell.
President Michael D Higgins issued a statement yesterday saying he had accepted the resignation of Mr Buckley, on the advice of the Government.
The comptroller is an independent constitutional officer and so the President accepts the resignation.
